THE J&L DIFFERENCE
It’s the little things. And we’re pretty particular about them.
You might look at a piece of J&L clothing and see a cute little outfit.
I see the fabric samples, the fit adjustments, the measurements, the revisions, and the countless little decisions that happened before it ever made it onto our website.
Because there’s a whole lot more that goes into creating a piece of clothing than picking a colour and calling it a day.
And honestly? I’m probably a little more particular about those details than I need to be. 😂
But there’s a reason for that.
01. EVERY DETAIL MATTERS.
A waistband that’s comfortable without constantly falling down.
A seam that sits where it should.
A neckline that actually fits.
The right amount of stretch.
These might seem like little things, but they’re the difference between clothing that looks cute on a hanger and clothing that actually works for the people wearing it.
We develop our designs, test samples, make adjustments, and sometimes go through more revisions than I’d like to admit.
And yes, I’ve absolutely delayed a product because something didn’t fit quite the way I wanted.
Because if we’re going to make it, I want to make it right.
02. MADE TO GROW.
One of my favourite things is hearing how long your kids have been wearing their J&L.
A dress that started as a dress and became a tunic.
Pants that started cuffed and eventually fit at full length.
A piece that’s been worn by three, four, or even more children.
We’ve always paid attention to how our clothing fits, not just when you first buy it, but as your children grow.
Of course, every child grows differently, and not every style will fit for years.
But designing clothing with longevity in mind has always been important to us.
Because the best clothes are the ones that actually get worn.
03. FABRIC MATTERS.
I’m pretty particular about fabric.
How it feels. How it stretches. How it washes. How it holds up after being worn approximately 47 times in one week.
We carefully select materials like bamboo, organic cotton, hemp, linen, Tencel™ and other thoughtfully chosen textiles depending on the collection.
We consider comfort, durability, movement, and how the fabric performs in real life.
Because when you’re dressing a baby, a busy toddler, or yourself, the last thing you want is clothing that feels uncomfortable.
And if you’ve ever had a child refuse to wear something because of how it feels, you know exactly what I’m talking about.
04. MADE WITH CARE.
We’re proudly Canadian-owned, and the vast majority of our clothing is manufactured right here in Canada.
This has always been something I’m incredibly proud of.
Manufacturing clothing involves a lot more people and steps than most customers ever see.
From sourcing fabric and creating patterns to cutting, sewing, finishing, labelling, and quality checks, there are so many hands involved in bringing a single garment to life.
Not everything we make is currently manufactured in Canada, and I want to be transparent about that. Some important items such as knit sweaters, quilted blankets, socks etc are too difficult to manufacturer in Canada.
But supporting Canadian manufacturing remains a priority as we continue growing and making decisions about future collections.
05. DESIGNED TO WORK TOGETHER.
Have you ever noticed how our colours seem to work with pieces from other collections?
That’s not an accident.
We spend a lot of time choosing colours, prints, and styles that can be mixed and matched.
Because I don’t want you to buy a pair of pants that only works with one specific shirt.
I want you to be able to build a wardrobe where pieces actually work together.
Less standing in front of the closet trying to figure out what matches.
More getting dressed and getting on with your day.
Especially when you’re trying to get multiple children out the door. 😂
06. MADE TO BE LIVED IN.
At the end of the day, we’re making clothing for real life.
For babies who spit up five minutes after getting dressed.
For toddlers who spend more time on the floor than standing.
For kids who climb, run, explore, and somehow come home covered in things you can’t identify.
And for women who want to feel comfortable without sacrificing how they look.
I don’t expect our clothing to sit perfectly folded in a drawer.
I want it worn.
Washed.
Worn again.
Passed along when it’s outgrown.
And hopefully loved just as much by the next person.
That’s the J&L difference.
